The treatment approach used promotes healing, by decreasing inflammation, muscle spasm, tension and adhesions formed in the spine and limbs after injury, following surgery or following significant stress. It aims to restore normal pain-free movement and equilibrium in the body. It uses a specific form of massage and joint articulation developed over many years; this is sometimes accompanied by joint manipulation, to re-set the position of a joint and remove adhesions.

Ultrasound is used to promote
healing by, improving the circulation, which inturn encourages cells involved
in the healing process to go to the site of injury. |

| Exercise | ||||||||
| Exercises to aid in the healing process are given and are
tailored to each individual. The Barnes Clinic aims to explain each treatment approach and the reason behind each set of exercises. Emphasis is placed on injury prevention, especially for those who perform repetitive manual tasks at home, in the work place or in their chosen sport. |

| Treatment of Babies | ||||||||

Babies can get stressed when the mother is in labour or when they are delivered by forceps or suction. This leads to tension in the soft tissues around the head, neck and abdomen, which are responsible for the set of symptoms known as colic (for an example of these symptoms please see the FAQs section). With the use of gentle soft tissue release techniques including cranial osteopathy, the baby's soft tissues relax, and will return to normal usually in two to three sessions.
